the cats have declared war
summer is here, the days are long, and nobody in this house is behaving
Dear Book Friends,
Today is Father’s Day, which I know can mean a lot of different things to different people.
For some, it’s family barbecues and phone calls.
For some, it’s remembering someone you miss.
For some, it’s complicated.
And for some, it’s just another Sunday in June.
So wherever today finds you, I hope you’re able to spend at least part of it doing something that brings you a little joy.
Over here, summer has officially arrived. It’s hot. The days are long.
And apparently, my cats have decided that the extra daylight means they should be awake for approximately twenty-three and a half hours a day.
They don’t even go outside. There is no logical reason for this. And yet.
One of them has taken up sprinting through the house at top speed for no apparent reason.
Another has developed a deep and urgent need for cuddles at three in the morning. Not two. Not four. Specifically three.
And both of them have recently become convinced that any closed door is a personal insult. The amount of dramatic crying that happens because a door exists is honestly impressive.
Sometimes I look at them ricocheting off the furniture and think, “Wow. That’s a lot of feelings for such a small creature.”
Then I remember I write books about people with too many feelings making questionable decisions, and suddenly it all makes sense.
Maybe that’s why I understand them. Or maybe we’ve all just been a little stir-crazy lately.
The longest day of the year is here, summer is stretching out in front of us, and everything feels like it’s moving into a new season.
I’ve been spending a lot of time writing, plotting, and daydreaming about future stories. Some involve ghosts. Some involve vampires. Most involve people making their lives significantly more complicated than they need to be.
As usual.
So now I’m curious: What’s your favorite thing about summer? Long evenings? Vacation season? Air conditioning?
(There are no wrong answers, although air conditioning is making a very strong case for itself right now.)
Hit reply and let me know.
Happy reading,
Cali
p.s. Most of my books are now in KU, if you need something to binge away the summer days. May I suggest something with a little whimsy?

King Gadeiros has no interest in marriage whatsoever. His only concerns are for his pursuits in battle and gaining lands for Atlantis. When his father-god, Poseidon, arranges a bride for him, his world is turned upside down. Infuriated, he whisks his would be bride away from the temple, intent on showing the gods that he is king in Gades and no one will dictate his future. What he learns of his betrothed surprises him though, and little by little the beautiful Keltoi moon princess starts to chip away at his war-hardened heart.
Aureliaura’s connection to the moon and tides makes her the perfect pawn in Poseidon’s game of power, but when she manages to capture the fierce, warrior king of Gades’ attention the instant he sets eyes on her, the question of who holds the most power is up in the air.
Can Gadeiros thwart Poseidon in the Sea god’s bid for power by winning the maiden’s love?
